SCIENCE PROJECTS
THE RESEARCH
The importance of taking your project seriously and preparing for your science project
THE PROCESS
Everything you need to know about developing, building, and testing the perfect science project
THE RESULTS
Showcasing your results and working present your projects to fellow scientists!
Well, the first thing that I have to say is that, if you are going to do a science project, document everything, and don’t throw anything away. You never know when that information will become important, and it is great reference material so that you can go back and see how you have progressed. I wish I would have had that same bit of information before I started my first “real” science project because it would be nice to have pictures and video of how the idea progressed all the way back to the beginning.
Next, take your science project very seriously. It is important to develop the ability to understand the scientific method. Start off with a basic question about how or why something happens and look around to see how you can make something better or different. Do not ever underestimate your ideas. It is very possible that you might be on the cusp of something big if you just put the time and effort into working to develop your ideas. Those science projects that your teacher requires each year are very important parts of your education if you allow them to be. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to perform a science project, and they can truly be a daunting task. However, the projects are usually given many months of preparation, and if you break it into smaller pieces, it will become much easier to accomplish.
Another important thing to remember is that your ideas are important. Do not brush off your ideas because you might think they are not good enough. Remember that nothing is easy, and even the most insignificant idea can turn out to become a very important part of a future design or result. Never underestimate your abilities. A science project is a big undertaking when you look at the whole thing as one big thing. However, when it is broken down into many parts, each one of those parts becomes a whole lot easier to manage. If each piece is given lots of attention to detail, the end product will be much more precise, and the results could possibly be easier to replicate.
Finally, focus on doing your best. You do not have to worry about competing with others. Science is a learning process, and nobody knows it all. You will be judged by teachers and professors who know a great deal about many subjects, but they had to learn it themselves. The project that you are working to develop is yours, and learning about it is a very personal experience. Take your time and enjoy the process! The only real competition is with yourself. The long journey that you will take will be so much more enjoyable when you embrace the process and focus on the task. You will learn so much about science and about yourself!
