BROADCOM MASTERS

Broadcom MASTERS is the premier middle school science competition in the United States. Gathered from across the United States, the Top 30 Finalists go to Washington DC to compete in a week of competition that focuses on team building and scientific exploration. Along the way, each participant is encouraged to develop team skills and is exposed to many new and exciting projects and adventures.

I have been working tirelessly developing and improving my project, ever since the first moment I knew about Broadcom MASTERS. My dream was, and is, to perform research that represents the high standards of Broadcom MASTERS.  That dream has been to design, build, and test a prototype wind turbine that utilizes biomimicry in both the turbine blade design and treatment of the turbine blade surfaces. During those years of design and testing, I learned how to successfully incorporate the scientific method into my experiment, and to eliminate potential human error in both the building and testing phases of the experiment.

The past three years have been quite a journey, with many ups and downs, however, my focus has always been, and still is, on the Samueli Award. Currently, I am a 2018 Broadcom MASTERS nominee, a top 300 Semi-Finalist and I am anxiously waiting for the results of the 2018 Broadcom MASTERS Top 30 finalists. I am just as excited today, and maybe a bit more, as I was when I waited for the 2016 & 2017 results. I put everything I had into my current project, and I hope that it is good enough to be one of the Top 30 finalists in Washington DC.

As far as designing, testing, and analyzing of the results, my current project is magnitudes ahead of my previous 2 year’s work, and that is a direct result of being a part of Broadcom MASTERS in 2016 & 2017.  Broadcom MASTERS has inspired me to continue building and testing my designs, and I by being a Broadcom MASTER, I learned that it is extremely important to thoroughly analyze the results of my experiments to determine their significance or lack thereof!

Being a Broadcom MASTER is, truly, one of the most exciting things that a young scientist can experience. I have met 59 amazing kids during both of those weeks, and we try to keep in touch as much as possible. Recently, I have had multiple “mini” reunions, with some of the parents and kids from 2016 and 2017 Broadcom MASTERS competitions while I lived in California. Many of the parents of the 2016 & 2017 Top 30 Finalists have created a special bond, and they try to keep in touch to see how all of the kids are doing. During those weeks in Washington DC, I was able to meet NOBEL Peace Prize winners, CEO’s of some of the most powerful companies in the world, and even Broadcom co-founder, Henry Samueli. Everything about the Broadcom MASTERS experience is like a dream come true! The best part about the program is that, once you become a Broadcom MASTER, you are always a Broadcom MASTER!!!!

I can still hear the words we spoke so many times during those weeks clearly in my mind:

“Who are we?”

“WE’RE BROADCOM MASTERS!!!!!”

“Who are we?”

“WE’RE BROADCOM MASTERS!!!!!”

“WOO HOO!!!!”

Videos that sum up what the 2016 & 2017 Broadcom MASTERS weeks have to offer are below.

Enjoy!!!
